Reader Recommends: Tuesdays with Morrie: Mitch Albom

Thanks Dr Megan Hunter for your recommendation of 'Tuesday's with Morrie' for books for happiness.com. I agree it is an amazing, inspiring read. I read it to my Grandma as she was losing her eyesight. She was very frustrated and scared and Morries advice about accepting your condition was a great help and comfort to her. I shall make the book available on the booksforhappiness website for others to access its benefits.

Books for Happiness Review: The New Manhood – Steve Biddulph

After I read this book I pleaded with my husband to read it. Now I’ve done this before, many, many times with out any success! I’ve tried to get him to read such books as ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ and the other classics. This time I really pleaded!  I said things like ‘This book will change your life, way more than any others, please can you read it, as a favour to me and to my astonishment he gave in! He devoured it in only 2 days, had an epiphany about his life and the contribution he could be making and quit his job to work in our son’s day care centre, being a positive role model for boys.  There are so many parents that have been made extraordinarily happy by us reading that book!

Books for Happiness Review: Buddhism For Mothers - Sarah Napthali

A kind mum in Mothers Group lent me this book when I was stressed out, not sleeping and neither was my son McEwan.  The simple, easy to do breathing and exercises are accessible to me all the time now. As a busy mum I don’t even need to find time out to do them; it’s just a part of day-to-day life being relaxed.

Books for Happiness Review: How to Heal Your Life - Louise L Hay

I got this book when I was 18 and doing my very first healing workshop. I have since turned to it whenever I was suffering from an illness or ‘dis-ease’.  The book has an A-Z list of ailments and the emotion that is causing them. Many a time I’ve wondered ‘why do I have a sore back right now?’ only to look at the book and go ‘A-ha, I’m feeling unloved, or worried about money-depending on whether it was lower or upper back.
It’s always been so spot-on and with a bit of a cry and some deep breaths most of my ailments have passed easily, leaving me happy and relaxed. For chronic illnesses the affirmations in this book are the way to go...

Books for Happiness Review: The Happiness Trap

This is the book that got it all started! The Happiness Trap explores why we with all our ‘riches’ aren’t happy.  The irony being that our continued search for happiness can be the very thing that makes it so elusive. There are so many revelations in this book that have made a huge difference to my life.
The one that springs to mind immediately as I write this is the concept that having emotions about our emotions is what locks them in place and makes us miserable and stressed. For example, if you feel anxious, the wise thing to do is observe yourself feeling anxious and be with it till it passes, looking at what it is that is making you anxious and accepting that feeling. What we tend to do is get anxious about being anxious or angry or guilty or sad about it and it locks it there to escalate, into such things as panic attacks.
Lesson learnt: Emotions are like the weather, don’t fight them, let them pass through you and they will move on; like the clouds, the rain, the sun-this too shall pass…
